sweatshirt-an evolutionary series

remember when you first got me?
basking in my all-black glory
utilising me till my polyester embedded initials began to warn you off
on your bad days,
my oversized hood hid your weary eyes from the over-prized world
on the good ones,
you’d happily give me away as a contraction promises of ‘forevers’
yet somehow
I always found my way back to your pale cupboard with dairy milk wrappers in the corners
my sleeves have hidden scars, that weren’t supposed to exist in the first place
and their beginnings had grown accustomed to being used for wiping your best friend’s tears away the smell of your perfume is now a distinct complementary add-on to what I am
I just hope you don’t outgrow me the way you did the ones you’d promised me in hopes of forever to I hope my lined sleeves don’t become too rough for you to wipe your blood-stained cheeks as Spotify chooses to play ‘your song’ on a particular night as frayed as my strings might get hope I never wear out enough to not be able to fill you with warmth on a perfectly pleasant July afternoon

the fluorescent ‘gap’ on me might dull away but i promise to always fill in your gaps with sheltered emotions, love and a little bit of colour-within.
